Monday, June 13

 

9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Registration of Classmates and Guests

Our class tent is located between the backs of Moore Psychology Building and Baker-Berry Library. The closest parking is Dewey Lot. People can be dropped off on Maynard Street or walk on the paths across the Green and behind Baker-Berry or from Dewey Lot. You can get a parking sticker for Dewey Lot at registration first by briefly double parking on Maynard St or the Maynard St Lot or the Moore deliveries lot.  (There is evening parking in the Maynard St Lot but not daytime or overnight.)  LATE NEWS:  If you are staying in the dorms, you can pick up your dorm room key at registration in the class tent.

The College has launched a project to conserve and catalogue the Town of Hanover Cemetery-- a treasure trove of Dartmouth history established by Eleazar Wheelock in 1771, Cady Rancourt '24, one of the students working on the project, has generously offered to give us a tour. You should wear shoes that are good for walking.

3:00–4:00 p.m. Lecture by Jeremy DeSilva, Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology (D)

The title of Jeremy’s lecture is; “First Steps,” How new fossils are reshaping the story of human evolution.  He will discuss his research in ancient caves in South Africa and 3.6-million-year-old volcanic ash plains in Tanzania.  There, Jeremy and his students are making discoveries that complicate the story of human evolution and reveal how our ancestors started walking upright.

3:30–4:30 p.m. Back to Class: The Future of Cancer Research at Dartmouth (D)

Learn about the cutting-edge cancer research conducted at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth from a panel of experts. The panel will be moderated by Steven Leach, MD, Preston T. and Virginia R. Kelsey Distinguished Chair in Cancer. The panelists include Yolanda Sanchez, PhD, Professor of Molecular and Systems Biology and Associate Director for Basic Sciences, Norris Cotton Cancer Center; Mary Jo Turk, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, O. Ross McIntyre, M.D. Endowed Professor, and Co-Director, Immunology and Cancer Immunotherapy Program at Norris-Cotton Cancer Center; and Brock Christensen, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology, Professor of Community and Family Medicine, and Professor of Molecular and Systems Biology.

9:00–10:15 a.m. Vietnam War Discussion

With Associate Professor of History Edward Miller, an expert on Vietnam and co-founder of the Dartmouth Vietnam Project.  David Aylward will lead a discussion about President Jim Wright's career as a professor and mentor, his scholarship in Enduring Vietnam and the just published War and American Life: Reflections on Those who Serve and Sacrifice.  We’ll also share our own memories of the Vietnam War, including events on campus.

Join Zachary Miller (Chickasaw Nation), Andrew Mellon Cultural Heritage and Indigenous Knowledges Fellow at the Hood Museum of Art & Baker-Berry College Library, Dartmouth for a presentation on Dartmouth’s Andrew W. Mellon Advancing Pathways grant and its engagement with the Native American Art Collection at the Hood Museum of Art
